The artist departed for a much-anticipated visit to Italy in mid-October 1881 and stayed for three months, stopping for extended periods of time in Venice, Rome, and Naples.
He studied the art of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the frescoes of Raphael in Rome, and he was also much interested by the wall paintings of Pompeii in the museum of Naples.
