    In 1854, George Eastman was born in Waterville, New York, and his father, George Washington Eastman, founded Eastman's Commercial College in Rochester in the same year. The family relocated to Rochester in 1860, but the elder Eastman passed away unexpectedly two years later, leaving his family with limited means. At the age of fourteen, George Eastman dropped out of school to help his mother, Maria Kilbourn Eastman, and his two elder sisters, Ellen and Kate. He was employed by the Rochester Savings Bank as a junior clerk after working for a local insurance company.
